Are Press On Nails the Ultimate DIY Nail Solution?

Updated: Dec 21, 2024

I've always loved finding ways to change up my beauty routine. So, when I decided to give my nails a break and skip the usual salon visits every couple of weeks or months (depending on the treatment), I discovered press-on nails. Not only did they save me time and money, but they also gave my look an instant upgrade.

Let's break down the pros and cons, plus a simple guide to (safely) using them!

My first set , no one believed they were press on nails!

But first, why are Press On Nails trending ?

Honestly, with how expensive everything is right now, press-on nails are a great budget-friendly option to keep your nails looking good without the pricey trips to nail salons. The big plus is their convenience.

It only takes about 10-15 minutes to put them on, which is great if you're always on the move.

How to apply

Step 1: Setting the table : Grab your press-on nails, a nail file, nail glue or glue tabs, and some rubbing alcohol pads. Having everything ready makes things a lot easier.

Step 2: Get your natural nails ready. Grab a nail file and gently buff your nail bed—this helps press on nails stick better and last longer. Make sure your nails are clean and dry. Use some rubbing alcohol to wipe away any oils and dirt for better sticking power. No alcohol pads? No worries, just wash your hands with soap and water to keep them clean.

Step 3: Choose the right size. Select press on nails that perfectly fit your natural nails. A good fit prevents lifting and creates a more natural appearance.

Step 4: Apply the glue. Just put a little bit of nail glue on the press on nail, then apply it on top of your nail bed, and hold it for a few seconds. Super simple!

If you're like me and prefer using glue tabs, just find the right size for your nails, stick the glue tab on the nail, and then onto your nail bed. Some people like to put the glue tab on the nail bed first and then place the press-on nail on top. It's totally up to you and what feels easier. I always suggest experimenting to see what works best for you.

Alright, as promised, here are the Pros and Cons :

Pros

  • Trendy nails without breaking the bank—no need for pricey salon visits.

  • Super quick and easy to put on, cutting down on the time you’d spend on a regular manicure.

  • Tons of designs and lengths to choose from, so you can match your personal style.

  • Can be reused, making them a budget-friendly pick for nail lovers.

  • If you apply them right, they can stick around for a week or more.

Cons

  • If not applied properly, might not stick as well as salon nails, which could cause them to lift or fall off.

  • Quality varies a lot between brands, and some might not last long.

  • Could harm your natural nails if you don’t apply or remove them right.(Same as any other nail treatment)

  • It is recommended to take them off after 5-7 days so your nails can breathe.

Perfect for Any Occasion

What I love about press-on nails is their incredible versatility! Honestly, I can change my nail style whenever I want, and it feels like having a personal nail salon at home—minus the hassle!

With the holidays approaching, I'm really into those playful designs. Imagine glittery reds, greens, snowflakes, and all the festive patterns. Whether I'm at a party or just relaxing at home, my nails definitely capture that holiday spirit!

You might be thinking—what about removal?

Taking off press-on nails is as simple as putting them on. Just soak your fingers in warm, soapy water to loosen the glue, then gently peel the nails off using a wooden nail stick. A little cuticle oil afterward will help keep your natural nails healthy.

If you want to reuse a set, soak them in warm, soapy water so you can easily remove any left over glue without damaging them.

The ease, affordability, versatility, and quick application make press on nails they are an ideal go-to accessory for anyone wanting a quick style change.

Next time you’re pressed for time but want to look fabulous, grab a set of press on nails. You won't regret it!
